Inspirational Stories: Students put heart into collective effort

Abbreviated from article by Judith Hunt, teacher at Camosun College.

In August 2021, nine students travelled from Kenya to Victoria, British Columbia to participate in a project in collaboration with World University Services Canada.

The students, who are refugees, read about Terry Fox’s cross Canada run for cancer research, then discussed as a class: “If you were to do a fundraiser, how would you do it, and who would you do it for?”

“We decided to raise funds for MSF for several reasons. First, MSF is familiar to many people, and second, it provides and delivers medical aid all over the world without paying attention to where people come from or their skin colour,” says student Innocent Gahota.

The students raised money selling small bags of candy for $2. They made flyers and posters, presented to classes and held a two-day fundraiser during which they shared information about MSF and took donations.

Thanks to generous supporters and a contribution from the Camosun College Student Society, the students raised $2,500.
